It was a backpacking holiday that first brought Piau to Australia. After travelling around Queensland and visiting Sydney, Melbourne and New Zealand, she decided she could build a career and a life in Australia.
After completing her degree at Bond University, and getting an internship with Downer in Queensland, she moved to Tasmania and was quickly moved into her first project, an irrigation scheme in the state’s north east.
“The weather was a shock after Brisbane,” she said.
“But it was amazing to explore this beautiful state and also good to see how the state government and the business committed to delivering projects in a sustainable way to maintain the environment.’
“I’ve gained so much to add real world experience to my academic learning, by going to sites and managing budget and cost control with project managers.
“I feel that I’m in a place where I have bigger value to bring to every project I work on, and it’s fantastic to see the completed structures that I’ve measured for.”
Piau says she loves Tasmania and she’s been really impressed by how warmly she’s been welcomed into the business.
“As a woman working in the construction sector, I was a bit concerned at first that my contribution might not be valued. But the team has just been fantastic and supportive. I cannot wait to join more and more projects with the delivery team and look forward to growing with the business.’’
